The trial is a much bigger deal than anyone anticipated. Women seem to favor dmitri (love triangle is enticing) and the men want to see him punished. Dmitri pleads his innocence when the judge asks him how he will plead. Not too enthused with the jury, which is made up mostly of peasants. Mitya looks dandy in a brand new frock-coat. Mitya first learns of smerdyakov"s death and exclaims: "he was a dog and died like a dog!" Doesn"t do him much good with the jury. Dmitri pleads "guilty" to drunkenness and dissipation, idleness and debauchery. But not to the death of "that old man, my enemy and my father" The brothers are allowed to give evidence without taking an oath. The defense lawyer, fetyukovitch, is a really smug, good lawyer. Grigory admits that he has forgiven dmitri and that fyodor mistreated him. Defense lawyer establishes that no one had actually ever seen the envelope.
