Chapter 4 notes each developmental stage is conceptualized as the struggle between a healthy and less-healthy personality characteristic the goal is to resolve each crisis in a way that will ultimately be more productive than destructive. In 1950 erickson first proposed his view of human development as a series of eight crises or struggles to be resolved. Each struggle/ crisis is resolved when one of the two sides becomes a primary part of an individual"s personality. The involvement of social interaction in working through each stage is the reason. Erikson"s theory is often referred to as a psychological theory. The potential for each particular stage exists before and after the time when that stage is dominant. *it is important to note that identity is quite personal and individual. Generativity vs. stagnation focus- concern for others adaptive strength- care. Despair focus- life review & integration adaptive strength- wisdom individual differences and circumstances can influence or alter a particular person"s identity development.
