Rebel Girls: The Illustrated (And Quite Condensed) History of Women’s Studies
1. 19th Century
a. Women fought for right to private and public higher education admissions. Oberlin
College when it integrated its campus in 1837 and the Seven Sisters sprouted up
between that year through 1889 in an effort to maximize opportunities for women
who were banished from university life or silo’ed within sexist programs on other
campuses.
b. Later decades of the nineteenth century: women such as M. Carey Thomas call for
admission to the “men’s curriculum
2. 20th Century
a. Activism of 60’s and 70’s influenced the climates on campus. Students and faculty
demanded more diverse prospectives.
b. Women’s activists laid the ground so that women already involved in academia could
break down the barriers in their discipline.
c. Began as an earnest attempt to redistribute knowledge and power.
d. 1969: Cornell offers first ever women’s studies course.
e. The focus in the 70’s was on defining the field and the focus of the 80’s was on
mainstreaming
f. 1975: National Women’s Studies Association is founded
3. Intersectionality
a. In 1980’s, feminist academics became concerned with how white and middle class
dominant their field was. Women brought to the forefront the desire for incorporating
minority rights studies and queer politics
b. Growth in what’s considered a women’s issue opened up the field
4. Today
a. In 2009, 10,000 courses teaching over 90,000 students at 700 colleges and
universities were running in the U.S.
b. It’s disrupted the male-centered canon, changed the boundaries between disciplines,
and introduced the social construction of gender and its intersections
c. Women’s studies growth is astounding- becoming institutionalized on university
campuses, resulting in the hiring of feminist faculty, adding courses of feminist
content, generating a body of resources and providing reason for the establishment of
feminist research centers.
