Intelligence is the ability to solve problems and to adapt and learn from experiences. Cannot be directly measured because it is so broad. One type vs. many different types of intelligence. Assumed intelligence is stable and continuous vs. change of intelligence across lifespan. Are the current tests of intelligence actually measuring intelligence. Intelligence consists of abilities in multiple domains. Componential/information processing (analytical) - traditional view of intelligence, commonly assessed by intelligence tests. Experiential (creative) - dealing with novelty (transferring knowledge from one setting to another), automatized information processing with familiar problems) Contextual (practical) - street smarts , the actual application of things, includes adaptation, selection, and shaping. Most tasks require some combination of these. Math - ability to carry out mathematical operations. Musical - having sensitivity to pitch, melody, and tone. Spatial - ability to think in three dimensional ways. Kinesthetic - ability to manipulate objects and be physically skilled (ie. in space and avoid objects)
