Having only one x chromosome makes males more vulnerable than females to a variety of x-linked recessive disorders. In contrast; women will be carriers of the disorder unless both x chromosomes have it; then she will have it. Estimates phenotype; not genotype: concordance rate: degree of similarity in phenotype among pairs of family members, expressed as a percentage- range from 0-100% Genes in uence the kind of environment we experience. In males meiosis is completed before sperm are released. In females the nal stage only takes place when and if the ovum (egg) is fertilized by a sperm. Female outcome: 1 viable ovum and 3 non-functional polar bodies: zygote: following fertilization, the new cell formed from the union of sperm and ovum. The germinal period- rst 2 weeks: zygote travels down fallopian tubes to uterus & implants in the uterine wall, rst cell division happens 30 hours post conception, blastocyst: ball of 100 cells formed 1 week after conception.
