Challenges of hosting international students: vulnerable, among the most stereotyped and misunderstood (often being mistaken for domestic students of color despite cultural differences). Struggle adapting to college including finding part time work, fear of failure, workload and nervousness. There"s typically just a single international student affairs office, responsible for dealing with immigration issues, academic and social needs. Perception that all international students are the same and that their defining characteristic is having more economic than academic capital. Really the group"s only shared commonality is deciding to study outside of their home country. Background factors, such as race and language, shape experiences and outcomes. Early entry issues include mastering local language, cultural norms, food tastes and shock . English language learning: understanding lectures is especially challenging- being understood despite accents, being able to question and follow class directions.
