The many social categories that exist can be divided into: primary identities- most consistent and enduring impact on our lives. Race, gender, and nationality: secondary identities- fairly fluid- more dependent on situation. College major (80% change), occupation (5 to 7 careers in a lifetime), and relationship status (50% of marriages end in divorce), sports teams. At collective level (social identity), we are concerned with our group"s diffs from other groups, and the things that make our group unique. Not all identities are only indiv or social, can be both. People, especially in the us, are interested in uniqueness. Symbolic interactionsim- individuals" meanings for the things around them are from social or symbolic interaction with others. Four comm processes involved in identity development: reflected appraisals. Idea that people"s self-images arise primarily from the ways that others view them and from the many messages they have received from others about who they are.
