Gas exchange= transport of o2 and co2 between an animal and its environment, fundamental to all eukaryotic animals and photosynthetic plants. Respiratory + circulatory structures: large surface ares, thin interfaces: partial pressure (p)= fractional concentration relative to other gases present multiplied by the overall (atmospheric) pressure, measured in mmhg. Oxygen= 21% of gases in air > po2 is about 170 mmhg. For oxygen to diffuse from air into cells, the partial pressure of oxygen inside the cells must be lower than the partial pressure of oxygen in the atmosphere. Ventilation= movement of the animal"s respiratory medium (water or air) past a specialized respiratory surface. Circulation= movement of a specialized body uid that carries o2 and co2: hemolymph= circulatory uid in invertebrates. Gills= highly folded delicate structure that facilitate gas exchange with the surrounding water, crabs + aquatic salamanders + sh.
