PSY30400 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Connectionism
Chapter 9: Knowledge
• Connectionist Approach:
o alternative method to explain how knowledge is represented in mind
o Has gained favor with researchers because it is based on how information is
represented in brain and can explain a lot findings, including how concepts are
leared ad ho daage to rai affets people’s koledge aout oepts
o Connectionism:
▪ approach to creating computer models from representing cognitive
processes → also called parallel distributed processing (PDP) because
propose that concepts are represented by activity that is distributed
o Simple connectionist network
▪ shown with circles as units, which are inspired by neurons
• concepts and their properties are represented in network by
pattern of activity in units
▪ Lines are connections that transfer information between units and are
roughly equivalent to axons in brain
▪ Units activated by stimuli from environment = input units
▪ Units send signals to hidden units which send signals to output units
▪ Connection Weight: determines how signals sent from one unit either
increase or decrease activity of next unit
• weights correspond to what happens at a synapse that transmits
signals from one neuron to another
