Chapter 9: Knowledge
Connectionist Approach:
o alternative method to explain how knowledge is represented in mind
o Has gained favor with researchers because it is based on how information is
represented in brain and can explain a lot findings, including how concepts are
leared ad ho daage to rai affets people’s koledge aout oepts
o Connectionism:
approach to creating computer models from representing cognitive
processes also called parallel distributed processing (PDP) because
propose that concepts are represented by activity that is distributed
o Simple connectionist network
shown with circles as units, which are inspired by neurons
concepts and their properties are represented in network by
pattern of activity in units
Lines are connections that transfer information between units and are
roughly equivalent to axons in brain
Units activated by stimuli from environment = input units
Units send signals to hidden units which send signals to output units
Connection Weight: determines how signals sent from one unit either
increase or decrease activity of next unit
weights correspond to what happens at a synapse that transmits
signals from one neuron to another
