Chapter 8: Everyday Memory and Memory Errors
o Emotions enhance the SUBJECTIVE SENSE of REMEMBERING- the vividness of the
memory, confidence that it is accurate, and the sense of reliving n event- while at
the same time causing a decrease in memory for details of a scene
Rimmele did a eperiet to deostrate the DUAL ature of eotio’s
effect on memory
subjects viewed 60 pictures (30 neutral and 30 negative) and made a
confidence rating for each / a remember know judgment / color of
frame for pictured they remembered
Subjects were most likely to remember emotional (negative) pictures
than neutral
o also showed a higher confidence for emotional pictures but
less likely to correctly remember color of frame surrounding
the remembered photo
Led to conclusion that emotions enhance the ability to remember
that an event occurred and some of its general characteristics, but do
not enhance our memory for details of what happened
o Rehearsal and Media Coverage =
