Achievements in public health, 1900-1999: control of infectious diseases. Deaths from infectious diseases have declined in the us this century: drop in infant and child mortality. In 1900, the 3 leading causes of death were: pneumonia, tuberculosis, diarrhea/enteritis. Influenza pandemic: 20 million deaths, 500,000 in us. Back in the day, it was best to find large game to eat for a week rather than finding small game every day. In different landscapes and climates, there are different kinds of animals. Ancestors became omnivores due to food availability. Domestication of animals and plants eventually came: learned palatability of food and animals. If people could not help the community in some way, they had to leave. Had to prevent eradication of certain food sources (like animals) in order to have food for a long period of time rather than just killing them all at once and not having another food source. Weeds were also bothersome: farmers were able to tame them.
