Stratification and social mobility in the united states. Stratification is universal in that all societies maintain some form of social inequality among membrs. Functionalist and conflict theorists offer contrasting explanation for the existence and necessity of social stratification. Use the dominant ideology to further their own interests. Objective method of measuring social class: objective method of measuring social class, class is viewed largely as a statistical category. Gender and occupational prestige: for many years, studies of social class tended to neglect the occupations and i ncomes of women as deteriminants of social rank. Paul samuelson- the mean is a less useful statistic than the median for describing the average, or typical, income. Careful economic analysis has shown that over the past 30 years, federal and stae tax polticies have tended to accentuate this trend twoad income inequality. Globalization is often blamed fo this rowing inequalitk, because it has forced liess skilled workers to compete with lower paid, foreign-born workers.
