CEM 151 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Abbreviation, Significant Figures
Document Summary
A set of test hypotheses that agree with observations and give an overall explanation of some natural phenomenon. Matter: anything with mass and takes up space. The world is real and exists independent of us. The objects are not divine but more like a garden to live in. Precise and therefore we can apply mathematics to our observations. The investigative efforts of mankind can discover order in the natural world. This order must be uncovered by experimentation as opposed to deduction. It is not absolute but is constantly subject to change. Separates heterogeneous mixture of a solid from a liquid or a solution. Separates homogeneous mixture of liquids based on their differences in boiling points. Possible clues that a chemical change has taken place are heat evolution or absorption, color change, gas production and formation of precipitate i. e. combustion, rusting, oxidation, decomposition, fermenting, etc.
