North africa, especially the western half of north africa is known as the maghreb. The term middle east was created by westerners. Most middle eastern borders were also established by european powers after world. Pan arabism still exists as a popular sentiment since its invention by egyptian president nasser during the cold war. Arab world: describes 22 arabic-speaking countries in the world that function as a single geopolitical unit. The rise of shiite communities in the arab world can be contributed to iraq and iran who are majority shiite nations. Islamic world: refers to the total number of the world"s muslim majority countries which are spread out internationally. Muslim world: refers in a cultural sense to the worldwide community of muslims who are spread out internationally. The middle east is the center of the muslim world. The middle east contained the fertile crescent which was the location of three of the world"s major early river valley civilizations.
