Understanding europe"s political and economic development is critical to understanding international affairs. The european union is the largest free trade area in the world. Europe was very fortunate with its nature and environment. European balance of power created competition between states which created lots of development in all aspects of society. Europe established military dominance in 17th and 18th centuries. European common market created in 1957 and eventually became the european union. Europe was divided between the north atlantic treaty organization and the warsaw pact after. Also, very christian but divided between christians sects. Organized religion doesn"t play much of a role in the lives of most western europeans. European languages are divided into germanic, romance and slavic. First modern democracies were formed in europe and north america. Liberal democracy: system of government that institutionalized majority rule and equality under law.
