For example, one the eve of the civil war 42,000 black methodists worshiped in biracial south carolina churches; by the end of reconstruction only. Health care ran hospitals established during the war and provided medical care and drugs to both black and white southerners. Land reform: the bureau was given authority to divide land into 40 acre increments for sale to former slaves. Summer of 1865 andrew johnson (who succeeded lincoln) order all land sold to be returned back to their owners. Freedmen stated that to be considered free me, the must be able to acquire land. From there the freedmen went back to work on white plantations: sharecropping: a (cid:272)o(cid:373)pro(cid:373)ise (cid:271)et(cid:449)ee(cid:374) (cid:271)la(cid:272)k"s desire for la(cid:374)d a(cid:374)d planters demand for labor discipline.
