Primary activities: those concerned directly with natural resources of any kind. Secondary activities: those that process, transform or manufacture raw material derived from primary activities. Tertiary activities: involving the sale and exchange of goods and services. Quaternary activities: those dealing with the handling and processing of knowledge and information. National, regional and locally based economic specializations that have evolved with the growth of the world-system of trade and politics and with the locational needs of successive technology systems. International division of labor: specialization by countries, in particular products of exports. Highest levels of gdp are associated with economies that are postindustrial. Newly industrializing countries: formerly peripheral countries within the world system, that have acquired significant industrial sector. Tertiary and quaternary sectors are significant only in the most affluent countries of the core. Half of the gdp core countries is based on production and distribution of knowledge.
