Neoclassicism - a revival of classical greek and roman forms in music, art, literature, etc. Occurred during the french revolution of 1789. Pioneered by painter jacques-louis david, who believed that the arts should serve a beneficial social purpose in a time of social and govt reform. Rejected the frivolous immortality of the aristocratic rococo style. Most subject matter is moreso roman bc rome represented a republican or non- hereditary government. In his painting the oath of the horatii, the subject is a story of virtue and the readiness to die for liberty; it was made to inspire courage in revolutionary leaders. Through usage of rational, geometric designs, david strongly contrasts the softness of the rococo movement; everything is very rigid and angular. Angelica kauffman overcame the obstacles of being a woman in the art world and was commissioned four oval paintings from the british royal academy. These paintings were based on the theme of the four basic skills of art.
