Did not discard theological concerns, but did focus on more secular. Stressed the potential value and ability of humans to solve problems, rational sol. 15th century italians believe they were responsible for the glory of the ancient greek, but muslim scholars maintained respect for the greeks & translated works into arabic. New values combined w/ technological advances brought forth a new style of art, in which paintings and sculpture were liberated from their roles of supplements. Evolved in different ways in north and southern europe. The gothic style reached its high in the north, while the byzantine & classical styles were popular in the south. Italian (s) art grew from classical mediterranean traditions that were human- centered and often emphasized the ideal.
