ARH 2000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Relief, Seattle Art Museum, Homeless Shelter
Document Summary
Freestanding - a sculpture meant to be seen from all sides. As we move around it, our experience is a sum of its various aspects. A single photograph only shows us the sculpture under one kind of light, not enough. Relief - a sculpture that is not freestanding but projects from a background surface. Low-relief - the projection from the surrounding surface is slight. Also known as bas relief, shadows are minimal. Ex: coins stamped from molds, like apollo coin. Some of the most finely crafted low-relief sculptures are in the temple of angkor. Wat in cambodia, the center of the khmer empire in the 12th century. High-relief - more than half of the subject emerges from the background. In robert longo"s corporate wars: walls of influence figures convulse of conflict and pain, dynamic gestures and diagonal placing of loose limbs make it active. Methods - most sculptures are made by modeling, casting, carving, constructing & assembling.
