Document Summary

Metal atoms = same name as the metal. Metal form cations with different charges, roman numeral in parentheses + name of the metal. Formed from nonmetal atoms have names end in -ium. Monoatomic anions - ending of the name of the element with -ide. Oxyanions - polyatomic anions containing oxygen have names ending in either -ate or -ite. Ate is used for the most common oxyanion of an element. Ite is used for an oxyanion that has the same charge but one o fewer. Clo- perchlorate ion chlorate ion chlorite ion hypochlorite ion. Anions derived by adding h+ to an oxyanion - prefix the word hydrogen or dihydrogen. Cu(clo4)2 calcium chloride aluminum nitrate copper (ii) perchlorate. Ide -ic, adding the prefix hydro- + acid: Ate -ic or -ite -ous + acid. Binary molecular compounds farther to the left in the periodic table is usually written first. An exception occurs when the compound contains halogen (except fluorine), oxygen is written last.
