BIOL 112 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Ventral Nerve Cord, Intertidal Zone, Parapodium
Document Summary
Metamerism - division of the body into similar segments that are arranged linearly along the anterior-posterior axis. Cephalization - the concentration of sense organs and nervous systems are in ganglionic mass (with advanced nervous system) Circular muscle - helps contraction (diameter control) Longitudinal muscle - helps the organism moving forward. Intestine - blood vessels in intestine contains digested food which is where nutrients can be absorbed and transported to the rest of the body. Typhlosole - increase surface area for food absorption. Mesenteries - folds used to supported peritoneal tissue. Peritoneum - lines the coelom from mesoderm, derived from embryonic mesoderm layer. Nephridia - get rid of metabolic waste to outside world. Chloragogen tissue - serve many of the same function as liver. Common marine animals, intertidal zone or depths of more than 4500m. Eaten by flatworms, starfish, fish, other marine animals. All body segments are identical and bear a pair of lateral parapodia - for gas exchange and locomotion.
