Document Summary

Chapter 2: most people today live much longer than in the past. This affects familial relationships: people have fewer children. Child mortality isn"t really an issue any more so they don"t need back-up children. In the past, you may have five children hoping that 2 survive: family members perform fewer functional tasks at home now. In the past, children all had to help work the land. Which is why they tried to have so many children: families have become more diverse in recent decades, gay couples. Usually refers to heterosexual couples but is changing now: conjugal family-a nuclear family that is also functionally independent of extended family members. Does not depend on monetary things from extended family: patrilineal- a family system where wealth and power are transmitted from fathers to their sons, matrilineal-a family system where wealth and power are transmitted from mothers to daughters.
