SOCL 2001 Chapter : Socialization
Document Summary
How social interactions form our sense of self. Our experiences have taught us to see things in other people in just their looks and gestures. One little flash and there is an entire web of meaning. It makes us human and teaches us how to interact. It"s learning our own culture and it comes very early. After the sex is discovered, everything starts happening. Painting the nursery, gender specific clothes, naming, etc. Limits of socialization (it"s not set in stone that you will grow up in a certain way. ) Both biology and social interactions make us who we are. The hair style is not genetic, but the child"s facial features are. The (concept of) self emerges from our ability to imagine how others see us. We tend to replicate actions when other people give us positive reactions. We tend to please others because we want a positive image of self and we use others as a mirror.
