Socialization- lifelong process of social interaction where a person acquires a social identity and ways of thinking feeling, and acting. Purposes of socialization: establishes our social identity, teaches us role taking, controls our behavior, we internalize values and beliefs, transmits culture to the next generation. We conform: many choices we make are shaped and limited by beliefs, values, and norms learned through socialization. Isolated or institutionalized kids don"t develop characteristics that are. Nature vs. nurture: biologist focus on role of heredity in human development emphasizing the role of nature, social scientist focus on role of learning, socialization, and culture, emphasizing the role of nurture. Nature: sociobiology- theoretical approach that applies biological principals to explain the behavior of animals, including human beings, argues that nature determines, gender identity, higher levels of aggression in males. Nurture: cross cultural data show different conditions for children, research suggests environment can influence biology, abuse of alcohol can cause genetic damage, childhood trauma influences developing brain.
