Document Summary
The transition of cultures and social institutions over time. Collective behavior -the spontaneous and unstructured behavior of a large number of people (riots, fads, fashion) [you might not do them alone] Rumors: unfounded info spread quickly [y2k] (gossip- spreading news about other people"s personal lives) (urban legends- stories that supposedly happened to people- potentially to warn us that we are living in a dangerous world) Fashion- standard of appearance that is widely accepted within a society (a way of thinking and a behavior) Fad-spreads rapidly and enthusiastically but last for only a short time. Craze- all-consuming passions for a short period of time (either people making money or spending money, beanie babies) Crowds- temporary collections of people who come together and share a common interest (same geographic position and come together for a specific event) Conventional- specific purpose or cause and following its norms (graduation ceremony, religious service) Expressive- exhibit strong emotions to some object/event (mardi gras)
