Document Summary
Another problem related to agricultural practices that has arisen in recent decades is the dead zone in the gulf of mexico (and in other coastal areas) Fertilizer use in upper mississippi river drainage. More specifically, stream flow keep going up and down in the river, however the nitrate keeps going up. Dead zone moves around and the intensity changes as well. Tough to control oxygen result in dead zone. Minimize fertilizer, pesticide, and herbicide runoff e. g. feedlot settling pond and lagoon; stripe cropping and contour farming (both uses as buffering field) A third agriculturally- related water quality problems is irrigation. Removal of water from streams and aquifers to provide water for crops in arid areas. Problems include loss of water (evaporation), contamination of water runoff, repeated withdrawals (compounding water quality problems), waterlogging (put water in the land that it is hard to permutated, always wet soil) , and soil salinization. Industrial pollution is also pervasive in developed (and developing) countries.
