Israelite society: gender, legal, prophets religious voice, existed alongside king, priest, and scriptural stuff. Israelite monarchy (destruction of second temple): prophets = messengers. God speaks through him via dreams, visions, etc. 55 named explicitly (7 women; moses"s sister, isaiah"s wife, deborah, + 4): not all prophets told the future. Prophets = social justice/reform/change: isaiah: brought message to judah right after fall of israel. Destruction of northern kingdom done by god"s hand because israel had fallen away from god. Judah get the same if didn"t change its ways. Also spoke of a future time when israel would be restored, time of peace, lion and lamb. Virgin birth later claimed by christians: elijah: has continuing role in current religious practice of judaism. Believed that he did not die, but taken to heaven so as not to experience death; thought to return to set things right. Adaptations focus around three events: the exile judah fell to babylonians 586; jews dispersed among babylonian empire.
