A neurodevelopmental disturbance that has lifelong implications. The disorder has been known for some time (1902) but only came to prominence in the 1950s and 6-s with the development of psychopharmacology. It was recognized as a distinct mental disorder in 1980. Two factors: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity: inattention, makes careless mistakes in school or at work, seems not to listen when spoken to, fails to follow through on instructions, chores, etc, has difficulty in organizing activities. Is distracted by extraneous stimuli: hyperactivity/impulsivity, fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat, runs about inappropriately, has difficulty waiting one"s turn. Interrupts or intrudes on others: person can be categorized as predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive/impulsive or combined. In addition to core symptoms, secondary features are also present. Iq: seems to be about normal but poor academic achievement is common. Hs drop outs were 8 times more common in those in adhd. Conduct problems are common with adhd but they are not universal.
