Government offers a means to channel political conflict which allows society to be preserved. Democracy: form of government in which most people can effectively participate. Representative democracy: people rule themselves indirectly through representatives who are elected. Democracy doesn"t assume that some groups are wrong and that all groups can participate in politics. Groups are free to stand up for their own interests and that no one has a monopoly on the truth.
