PSYC 3082 Chapter : Chapter 5 Somatoform And Dissociative Disorders
Document Summary
Always preoccupied with health and/or body appearance and functioning. Non identifiable medical condition causing the physical complaints: like sheldon always think that something is wrong with him. Hypochondriasis always think something is wrong with them. Pain disorder thinks something is always in pain. Body dysmorphic disorder perpetual negative thoughts about a body part: physical complaints with no physical cause, rule one out and they would find another complaint. Severe anxiety focused on the possibility of having or developing a serious disease. Medical reassurance does not seem to help. Solve one and they will find another problem. Onset at any age, and runs a chronic course. Cognitive perceptual distortions: interpret bodily sensations of minor illness as threatening, familial history of illness. Extended history of physical complaints before age 30. Substantial impairment in social or occupational functioning. Concerned over the symptoms themselves, not what they might mean, as is the case with hypochondriasis. For secondary gain i. e. sympathy, missing class, staying home.
