Chapter 4 birth and the newborn infant. Labor is described in three stages, and together these stages complete the delivery and the passage of the placenta. The contractions increase to their greatest intensity, a period known as transition. Mothers cervix fully opens, eventually expanding enough to allow the baby"s head to fit. Last about 90 mintues the baby"s head emerges further from the mother with each contraction increasing the vaginal opening. The episiotomy (an incision sometimes made to increase the size of the opening of the vagina to allow the baby"s head to pass) happens during this stage. Occurs when the child"s umbilical cord and the placenta are expelled from the mother. Quickest and easiest and just takes a few minutes. Neonate term used for new borns possible on each.
