Document Summary

Transduction-the action or process of converting something (especially energy of a message) into another form. Allow signals to function differently in different cells. Observing the rate at which some chemical is destroyed or created. Cell signals regulate a wide variety of processes largely through two different mechanisms. Antagonistic pairs ex: blood glucose levels, glucagon and insulin. Glucagon: stimulates the breakdown of glycogen into glucose. Insulin: stimulates the conversion of glucose into glycogen. Negative feedback system, ex: thyroid hormones, regulate overall metabolism. Composed of specialize cells that can transmit action potentials form one cell to another. All cells have an electrical gradient or electrical potential across their cell membrane. K+ ions diffuse outside the cell, na-k pump pumps ions unequally. If depolarization is great enough it will stimulate an action potential. This is then propagated along the neuronal membrane. The formation of an action potential in one location causes a depolarization in the surrounding area triggering an action potential there.
