Document Summary

Classifying metamorphic rocks is based on texture. By solid-state change of pre-existing rock called a protolith. Solid-state => minerals change (regrow or recrystallize) No melt (melt would indicate igneous rock) Change => new mineral grow or new texture: background, modification of environment => cause metamorphism. Learning objectives: 5 conditions causing metamorphism, what are the different metamorphic rocks, how do we heat rocks? (burial [increases t and p] and conduction [increases t], 3 types of metamorphism, metamorphism. Different metamorphic rocks: change in temperature, change in pressure, increasing pressure and temperature, undergoes compression (shear, reaction with hot water. Take the protolith and hot water => changed composition: classifying, the different types, foliated. Temperature/ pressure change => minerals become unstable, new ones form. Compress => apply force perpendicular to the side of the rock. Shear => applying force parallel to the sides of a rock. Alternating bands of dark and light (rock is solid, one it melts it becomes igneous)
