Chapter 9 physical and cognitive development in middle childhood. Age 6 to start of adolescence (at approximately age 12) Previously, time of great physical strides (mastering several new skills as they grow bigger/stronger) Swift growth during first 5 years of life & again during adolescents but middle childhood relatively tranquil characterized as slow but steady growth. Elem school children in us grow average of 2-3 in/yr. By age 11, girls slightly taller than boys because they start adolescence earlier. Reflects more rapid physical development of girls (start adolescent growth spurt earlier, at age 10) Weight gain in middle childhood - boys/girls gain approx 5-7 lbs/yr. (weight redistributed - rounded look of baby fat disappears) Child in middle childhood are very much varied - significant differences ( i. e. some short, some tall; heavy, thin; etc. ) Difference in us children in height/weight due to people"s unique genetic inheritance. Includes genetic factors relating to racial & ethnic background.
