Consciousness- the awareness of you and your environment. Alter states of consciousness: the main one is sleep. Sleep- estimated you will sleep a third of your life. One of the most fragile behaviors that we will display. Provides you with physical, emotional, and cognitive health. A lot of activity going on in the brain. And to some degree, you are still paying attention to what is going on around you. The brain paralyzes major muscle groups when they dream. The older you get, the less your sleep. Sleepwalkers are not acting out there dreams. Doctors who specialize in sleep are slow to prescribing medicine- work on sleep hygiene first. Everyone dreams multiple dreams during the night. Dream during this stage, although fragmented dreams can occur in other stages. These dreams tend to be more anxiety filled. Free running cycles (biological clocks)- cycles that we cannot control. Ex: the circadian rhythm- regulates sleep and wake.
