PSYC 2000 Chapter : Psych 2
Document Summary
Parts of a neuron: a nerve cell, or a neuron consists of many different parts. Kinds of neurons: sensory neurons: carry incoming info from sense receptors to cns, motor neurons: carry outgoing info from cns to muscles and glands, interneurons: within the brain and spinal cord; communicate between motor and sensory neurons. Neuron communication: action potential: a neural impulse is a __electrical charge_ that travels down an axon. Central nervous system: the brain and neural networks, interconnected neurons form networks in the brain. Theses networks are complex and modify with growth and experience. Central nervous system: the spinal cord and reflexes, reflex: simple, automatic response to stimuli. Hormones: hormones: chemicals synthesized by the endocrine glands that are secreted in the bloodstream, example: adrenal gland releases epinephrine (adrenaline), which increases heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar, excitement during emergencies. Module 5: tools of discovery and older brain.
