PSYC 2000 Chapter : Chaper 8 Part 2
Document Summary
Chapter 8: development across the lifespan - part 2. Infancy and childhood span from birth to teenage years. During these years the individual has relatively rapid growth physically, cognitively and socially. Adolescence spans from the beginnings of sexual maturity to independent adulthood. Temperament refers to a person"s stable emotional reactivity and intensity. Identical twins express similar temperaments, suggesting heredity predisposes temperament. The ability to understand words develops before the ability to produce words. Cooing stage: at about 2 months the infant begins to make vowel-like sounds: ex: ooo & aaa. Babbling stage: beginning at 4-6 months the infant spontaneously utters various sounds, adding consonant sounds to the vowel-like sounds: ex: ah-goo, ba-ba-ba, ma-ma. One-word stage: beginning at or around the first birthday (12 months), a child starts to speak one-word and makes family adults understand him/her: the word doggy may mean look at the dog out there. Whole phrases communicated in one word are called holophrases.
