Document Summary
The confessions of nat turner tells the story of a slave who gathers up a group of freed or enslaved african americans and goes on a killing spree. Nat gets captured, goes to prison and accounts his story to thomas gray- the man trying turner for his horrendous crimes. The author questions nat"s education and purpose for inciting the uprising. Nat says that he wanted to steal money and valuables from the slave owners in order to leave virginia for a better life. However, the author sees him as a man with little or no knowledge of money. He also says that nat has no ability to read or write and whatever education he had was passed down to him by his parents. He goes on to say that his demeanor in court does not support his many gifts and talents and believes that he"s a coward because he did not resist being captured by mr. phipps.
