Document Summary

Neuron- the basic unit of the nervous system. Glial cells- comes from the greek word glue , they fill the gaps between neurons and help neurons in many ways (facilitate communication, cleaning up, etc. ) There may be 100 billion neurons in your brain. A way to think about neuron transmission is like an ipod (cell body), the headphone wires (myelin), and our ears are the axon terminal. Action potential- a neural impulse; a brief electrical charges that travels down an axon. Threshold-the level of stimulation required to trigger a neural impulse. Tiny gap between an axon terminal and another neuron. Firing neutrons release neurotransmitters that cross the synapse. Acetylcholine- important for learning, memory, muscle movement; related to alzimers. Serotonin- influences mood and regulates food intake; depression. Dopamine- important to movement of the frontal lobe activity; schitzophrenia.
