PSYC 2000 Chapter : 05-Feb
Document Summary
Only given reinforcement some of the time more resistant to extinction. Fixed ratio and variable ration results in higher number of response b/c participant realizes that reinforcement is based upon responses. Fixed ration and fixed interval: lower resistance to extinction. Variable ration and variable interval: higher resistance to extinction. Fixed-ratio: reinforces a response only after a specified number of non-reinforced responses. After reinforcement, there is a pause in responses (ex: coffee card that requires a certain number of punches) The more responses you require for a person to gain reinforcement, the faster the responses occur. Variable ratio: reinforces a response after an unpredictable number of non-reinforced responses; number of responses changes from one trial to the next. Fixed interval: reinforces a response only after a specified amount of time has passed. Ex: preparing more when an exam draws closer; getting paid every two weeks. Ex: telephoning another individual whose line is busy; pop quizzes produce more consistent study behavior.
