Over one-fifth of all adults over age eighteen suffer from a mental disorder in any given year. Fear: innate, almost biologically based alarm response to a dangerous or life- threatening situation. Anxiety: inordinately apprehensive, tense, and uneasy about the prospect of something unpleasant happening. Anxiety disorder- excessive or unrealistic anxiety and fearfulness. Phobias- irrational, persistent fear of an object, situation, or social activity, response out of proportion to danger actually posed. Social phobia- fear of interacting with others or being in social situations that might lead to a negative evaluation. Specific phobia- fear of objects or specific situations or events. Incapacitated, unable to function on a day-to-day basis. Free-floating anxiety- anxiety that is unrelated to any realistic, known source. 11% of people suffer a phobia at some time in life or 5-6% have a phobia at any given time panic disorder: Have frequent periods of anxiety and occasional attacks of panic.
