Social influences: how we are influenced by others. Ways in which a person"s thoughts, feelings and behavior can be affected by others. Group influence: conformity: changing one"s own behavior to more closely match the actions of others, asch"s classic study on conformity in the 1950s. Subjects asked to judge lengths of lines while working in a group. Normative social influence: a persons desire to gain approval or avoid rejection. Respecting normative behavior because price may be severe if not followed. Informational social influence: group may provide valuable information. When the task is difficult or you are unsure, it makes sense to listen to others. Think they picked up on info you missed social influence: compliance. Foot in the door technique: asking for small commitment and, after gaining compliance, asking for bigger commitment.
