What people do, why they do what they do, what is going on in people"s brain and bodies as they do these things. Scientific study of behavior (any action) and mental processes (perceptions, thoughts, feelings) latent constructs (depression- measuring symptoms). Scientific study- gathering data; not application of pseudoscientific beliefs (ex. Hypnosis to lose weight) or application of people"s common sense (ex. Be able to label examples of each goal: description- get as many details as possible to understand what you"re interested in. Who, what, when, where, under what circumstances: explanation- help generate theories & hypotheses. Test hypothesis, review results, replicate: prediction- when something is more or less likely to occur. What would happen if : control-promote desired effects/behaviors. How can we reduce or eliminate problem behavior: types of psychological professionals: Psychiatrist- medical doctor; specializes in diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. Psychiatric social worker- licensed, master"s degree; therapy methods focused on environment.
