Parts of the brain: brainstem, cerebellum, lobes, temporal, occipital, frontal, parietal. Parts of the neuron [*figure 2. 2*: dendrites, cell body, myelin, axon, axon terminals, nucleus. Synapse: synapse- tiny gap between an axon terminal and another neuron, firing neurons release neurotransmitters that cross the synapse, synaptic vesicles- hold the neurotransmitter; neural firing drives them to the synapse, where they release their chemicals. Synapse and neurotransmitters: the neurotransmitter binds to the receptor site on the target cell, excess neurotransmitter is reuptaken. Neurotransmitters: drugs, neural diseases often affect neurotransmitters, acetylcholine- important for learning, memory, and muscle movement; Alzheimer"s: serotonin- influences mood and regulates food intake; depression, dopamine- important to movement and to frontal love activity; schizophrenia. In the early 1980"s- designer drug supposed to be heroin was injected by a group of young adults: they became frozen as a result.
