Neuroscience: branch of the life sciences that deals with the structure and functioning of the brain and the neurons, nerves, and nervous tissue that form the nervous system. Neuron- specialized cell in the nervous system that receives and sends messages within that system. Dendrites- parts of the neuron that receives messages from other cells. Soma- cell body/contains nucleus and keeps the entire cell alive and functioning. Axon- fiber attached to the soma-carries messages out to other cells. Axon terminals-end of the axon branches out into several shorter fibers that have swellings or little knobs on the ends/can be called presynaptic terminals or terminal buttons or synaptic knobs . Major depressive disorder is characterized by lower numbers of specific glial cells whereas in schizophrenia, parts of the brain have a greater number.
