The scientific study of behavior and mental processes (also called latent constructs) Has 4 major goals (be able to label examples of each goal): interested. Under what circumstance are they doing it: explanation- why is it happening. Important for generating theories to help us understand why things occur. Ex: test hypothesis, review results, replicate: prediction- can say when its more or less likely to happen, control- once you understand you can develop treatments? methods and focus on environmental conditions, work in hospitals, etc. Psychiatrist is a medical doctor with training that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of psych disorders. Devote more time to psych disorders and less time to marital, family, job, and school problems like a psychologist.
