POLI 2051 Chapter : Chapter 8
Document Summary
Individuals or interest groups put pressure on the government to act in their favor. This is great for interest groups that have a lot of money however, for those interest groups that do not have enough money, this is a problem: personal members of the interest groups will go lobby. One or two people lobby, not ten people. This creates familiarity between the congre ssman and interest groups. Professional lobbyists have to register with the state so that we know who they are lo bbying for and how much they are spending on lobbying. Demonstrate a constituent (anybody that the congressman represents) interest: must matter to the constituents in order to matter to the congressman, lobbyists must persuade maine guy to support the louisiana oil bill. Be well informed and balanced: convince congressman that the pros outweigh the cons. Keep it short and sweet: too long will push away the congressman.
