The relationship between government and health care is not new. One of the first pieces of legislation passed in the late 1700"s was healthcare for sailors. 1901: theodore roosevelt (progressive era)- health insurance even for those who cant afford it because a healthy populace works and stabilizes the economy. Conservative politicians maintain that this is something that needs to remain private government should not be in the business of providing healthcare. 1915: failed piece of legislation that gave health insurance to those who made less that 12,000 a year. 1930"s: franklin roosevelt with the new deal. New deal is a number of pieces of legislation made to improve the economy after the great depression. Fdr dealing with world war 2 and depression, no headway on health care. 1945: truman advocates for universal health care coverage . 2, communist fear , links universal healthcare with communism so truman"s attempts fail. 2008: president obama campaigns heavily for healthcare reform.
