Colonists were proud to be a part of the british empire. They just wanted to keep traditional rights as british subjects. Gb was restricting colonists from trading with whomever they want in order to protect its own manufacturers. England imposed taxes on colonists to pay for the soldiers there. This imposition of taxes without the consent of the colonists seemed like an act of tyranny. Second continental congress appointed a special committee composed of thomas. Jefferson, john adams, and benjamin franklin to draft a declaration of independence. Was unanimously adopted on july 4, 1776: key ideas in the declaration of independence: Human beings possess rights that cannot be legitimately given away or taken from them. Confederation- a loose association of states or territorial units without any or much power in a central authority.
